                                            Frances Alvis Hulbert

    Frances Alvis Hulbert, 88, died Monday morning March 10, 2008 at her home.  Frances was born May 3, 1919, Lynchburg, Virginia to Robert Harry  and Lorraine Noel Alvis.  She attended public schools in Lynchburg and graduated from Longwood College in Farmville, Virginia in 1940.  She taught for four years at Hayes-Barton (now Myrtle Underwood) School in Raleigh, NC.  In 1944 she studied at Union Theological Seminary and Teachers’ College of Columbia University in New York City, where she graduated with a Master’s Degree in Religious Education in 1945.

    From 1945 until she married in September 1947, Frances served as Director of Religious Education at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Atlanta, Georgia.  It was there that she met the late Rev. Irwin Hulbert, Jr.  She partnered with Irwin to serve Episcopal parishes and their larger communities in Jesup, Georgia; Hopkinsville, Kentucky; Georgetown, South Carolina; and, since 1965 in Washington and Chocowinity, North Carolina.

    A member of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church of Washington and of Trinity Episcopal Church, Chocowinity, Frances held an abiding interest in the  ecumenical Church.  She served on the board of Beaufort County Community College Foundation.  As a passionate supporter of education, she sponsored scholarships for technical, vocational and nursing students through the Beaufort County Community College Foundation and scholarships for beginning swimmers through the City of Washington’s summer swimming program.

    Frances is survived by her three sons, their spouses and children: Ned Hulbert and Mary Day Mordecai of Harrisville, N.H.; Robin and Shelley Goguen Hulbert and their children,  Ben, Sam, and the late Callie Frances of Peterborough, N. H.; and David and Mary Patricia Capehart Hulbert and their daughter Amelia of Wilmington, N.C.

    Frances is also survived
by a sister, Claire Phipps of Wilmington, N.C.; a brother Harry Alvis, Jr. and his wife, Ann, of Lynchburg, Virginia; a sister-in-law Alice Virginia Hoyle of Hilton Head, S.C.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

    In lieu of flowers, Frances requested that gifts be made to the charity of one’s choice or to  one of the following: the Irwin and Frances Hulbert Endowment Fund, care of Beaufort County Community College Foundation, or to St. Peter’s Episcopal Church Hulbert Memorial Fund for the support of the Summer Swimming Lessons Program through the City of Washington Aquatic Center.

    The family will receive friends at Frances’ home during the afternoon and evening on Wednesday, March 12, at 616 College Avenue in Washington Park.  

    All are welcomed to attend a service in celebration of Frances’ life to be held on Friday, March 14 at 11 a.m. at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, Washington, N.C., followed by burial in the Chapel Garden.
